The Hortobágyi Hídi Vásár 2026 will take place between 20–22 August at the Hortobágy fairgrounds, where this nationally popular traditional folk art and open-air market welcomes visitors during Hungary’s State Foundation Day and the celebration of King Saint Stephen.
At the 2026 edition of the Hortobágyi Hídi Vásár, in addition to handicrafts and folk products, organic products will also be available. The history of the fair dates back to the 19th century, when Debrecen and nearby settlements held livestock fairs at the foot of the Hortobágy’s iconic Nine-arched Bridge. At these fairs, cattle, pigs, horses, and sheep were mainly sold. Later, the livestock fair was supplemented and eventually fully replaced by a craft and market fair, where local artisans presented their handmade products. The popularity of the Hortobágyi Hídi Vásár has remained unbroken ever since. Today, it is held as a nationally significant folk art and craft fair, featuring potters, hat makers, woodcarvers, knife makers, and gingerbread artisans showcasing their unique handmade products to the public.
In addition to handicrafts, visitors can also enjoy gastronomic specialties and traditional regional dishes typical of the Hortobágy. The event’s spectacular program includes exciting performances such as a shepherds’ parade, the “Puszta Olympics,” equestrian shows, concerts, exhibitions, as well as folk dance and folk music performances showcasing the culture and natural values of the Great Plain.
The 2026 Hortobágyi Hídi Vásár, evoking the atmosphere of old times, offers many surprises, giving visitors the opportunity to discover Hungarian folk traditions and the enchanting world of Hortobágy.
